Senior Department of Energy Official to Host Press Conference Call on the National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Assistant Secretary for Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability Kevin Kolevar will host a press conference call on National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors.

In April, DOE issued draft National Corridors where DOE identified significant congestion and constraint in delivering electricity to Americans.  These draft corridors included areas in the Southwest (Southern California and portions of Arizona and Nevada), and in the Mid-Atlantic region (including portions of Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia; as well as the District of Columbia, Delaware, and New Jersey).

This followed DOE’s National Electric Transmission Congestion Study - directed by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 - which provided analysis of generation and transmission capacity across the U.S. and identified critical areas of congestion that need attention to meet growing electricity demand.  Based on the research documented in this Study, the Secretary of Energy may select and designate geographic areas as “National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors.”  This could help facilitate the construction of new transmission capacity that will relieve congestion problems, particularly as electricity consumption in the United States is expected to increase by 40% over current levels.
