Proposed Powerlines

Proposed Power Lines

There are currently 5 proposed power lines slated for Pennsylvania and surrounding states. Below are brief descriptions of these projects.

Susquehanna-Roseland Power line
Pennsylvania Power & Light (PP&L) has proposed this power line which will run from a PPL substation near Berwick, Pa., to a Public Service Electric and Gas Co. substation near Roseland, N.J. PPL has proposed 3 routes.

Trans-Allegheny Interstate Line (TrAIL)
The plan includes construction of a new 500-kV transmission line, new 138 kV transmission lines and related substation facilities within Allegheny Power's transmission zone. Allegheny Energy has proposed construction of a new 500-kV line extending from Southwestern Pennsylvania to West Virginia to Northern Virginia. This power line will potentially impact the following Pennsylvania counties: Green and Washington.

Potomac Appalachian Transmission Highline (PATH)
The PATH project includes approximately 244 miles of 765-kV extra-high voltage transmission from AEP's Amos substation near St. Albans, WV., to Allegheny's Bedington substation, northeast of Martinsburg, W.Va. Another 46 miles of twin-circuit 500-kV transmission will be constructed from Bedington to a new substation to be built near Kemptown, southeast of Frederick, MD.

AEP 765 Line
American Electric Power (AEP) filed with PJM to construct a 765 kv line. Putnam Co, WV to Frederick Co, MD to Middlesex Co. NJ. This project appears to affect the following PA counties: Berks, Carbon, Lebanon, Lehigh, Montgomery, Schuylkill, and York.

On April 18, 2007, AEP and Allegheny Power announced a joint venture to build and own this line. The joint venture will operate as a transmission utility within the PJM region. The two companies will share responsibility for siting, right of way acquisition, and regulatory approvals; AEP will have lead responsitility for engineering, design and construction.

New York State Regional Interconnect (NYRI)
The NYRI is a consortium of investors proposing to design and build 190-mile High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission system between central New York and the lower Hudson Valley.

Mid-Atlantic Power Path (MAPP)

The Mid-Atlantic Power Pathway ("MAPP") is PHI's proposal for a major (500 kV) transmission line linking Virginia to New Jersey via the Delmarva Peninsula, with associated improvements to connecting facilities. The proposed route largely follows existing PHI company transmission rights-of-way, as described in detail below, and is ideally suited to meet the demands of the rapid load growth and chronic transmission congestion throughout the area traversed and beyond.
