Land Stewardship Manager

Longwood Gardens

Longwood Gardens is seeking a full-time Land Stewardship Manager to lead daily land stewardship work operations, advancement of strategic goals, and special projects across Longwood Gardens’ 700+ acres of forests, meadows, wetlands, streams, ponds, agricultural lands, and designed naturalistic landscapes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing diverse ecosystems and interfaces between natural areas, formal landscapes, infrastructure, and neighborhoods in a public-facing context.
  • Leading a team and coordinating across the organization to achieve strategic goals.
  • Supervising staff, students, contractors, and volunteers.
  • Contributing to development and implementation of projects, budgets, and strategic plans.
  • Integrating scientific advances with stewardship practice.
  • Innovating and testing stewardship techniques.
  • Providing tours, talks, and interviews.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 5 years of experience in natural area management, ecological restoration, applied ecological science, or a related field.
  • 3 years of experience managing and leading a team and evaluating performance.
  • A bachelor’s or advanced degree or equivalent experience in Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline.
  • Experience managing projects, budgeting, and cost accounting.
  • Experience identifying wild plant and animal species of the Mid-Atlantic Piedmont region.
  • Experience collecting scientific data and proficiency with using ArcGIS mapping and MS Office applications.
  • Experience or technical coursework as machine operator of large landscaping/farming equipment such as tractor with PTO implements, skid loader with attachments, tree spade, and auger.
  • Pesticide applicator license or willingness to obtain one within six months of starting the position.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work occasional weekends, evenings, and holidays.
